Kansas DOT

This PGSuper configuration is hosted at PGSuper.com and implements beam shapes and LRFD settings used by the Kansas Department of Transporation (KDOT).

Note that this configuration requires PGSuper 2.4.2 or later.

Implemented Girder Shapes

  • Several variations of KDOT Type K3 and K4 I-Beams for harped strand and straight/debonded configurations

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Based on 2010 AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications with variations as follows:
  • KDOT type K3 and K4 precast I beams only
  • Strand slope check is disabled
  • Harped strand hold down check is disabled
  • Upper limit of 0.2 ksi for concrete tensile stress at release disabled
  • Upper limit of 0.2 ksi for concrete tensile stress for lifting disabled
  • Maximum stirrup spacing set to 18"
  • Railing load is distributed evenly across all girders
  • Final tensile stress for Service III set to 0.0948 * sqrt(f'ci) for all exposure conditions
  • Horizontal interface shear stress at girder/deck interface is computed using the classic shear flow formula
  • For losses, time from stressing to prestress transfer set to 18 hours
  • No acceleration for steam or radiant heat curing
  • Approximate lump sum per LRFD 5.9.5.3 is selected for the loss computation method
  • Checking and automated design for lifting and hauling is disabled. KDOT uses an alternative method based on the 1987 PCI Design Handbook. Use MathCAD sheet at KDOT web site for calc's.
  • The design algorithm will not reach an optimal concrete strength for the K4-"Straight" beams. This is because the upper straight strands are modeled using the harping sequence which disallows the algorithm from attempting to debond the lower strands. (That said, this is the best known method for placing upper straight strands in PGSuper). A recommended design approach is to first use the Girder Designer to find the overall strand layout and then reduce concrete strength by debonding lower strands manually.
  • Rating criteria has not yet been input. Users needing to perform rating analysis must input parameters manually in order to perform rating analyses. Feedback on recommended rating parameters is appreciated.
